Description:

Applications are invited for a research training bursary (i.e. A PhD plus Doctoral Certificate in Researcher Enhancement and Development). CASL Research Centre has a linguistic-phonetics focus, within a clinical context, and it sits within the School of Health Sciences at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

Applications are invited on any topic related to CASL’s current research, but bursary applications which address one of our five priority topics for 2021 will be preferred:
- Acquisition of English phonology, phonetics and meta-phonological awareness in bi-dialectal contexts and bi-dialectal families [BUR 21-21]
- Phonetic planning and silent transitions into and out of audible speech [BUR 21-22]
- The perception and production of typical disfluencies in speech [BUR 21-23]
- The use of ultrasound tongue imaging in dysphagia and swallowing [BUR 21-24]
- Functional synesthetics of voice and colour: how do lay people describe voice quality? [BUR 21-25]

Details of the centre’s strategic goals are available on our CASL website, along with links to current projects, publications, students and staff. Applications from qualified Speech and Language Therapists or non-clinicians are both welcome.

More information on CASL and details on how to apply for a bursary (or to the Graduate School using funding from elsewhere) can be found via the following URLs. In addition to this bursary opportunity, CASL welcomes applications for co-supervision of students registered at other institutions or with external funding at any time. Self-funded and externally registered students would have more flexibility in the topic of their research and should contact relevant potential supervisors, or Professor James M Scobbie, jscobbieqmu.ac.uk to discuss an application.

CASL’s research portfolio was rated 2nd in the UK for the REF census period (2008-2013) for the % of our research profile that was world-leading or internationally excellent (in outputs, environment and impact): 92%.
