Special Issue on Games and Gaming for Native and Foreign Language Learning - Aims, Disciplines, Methods and Technologies

This special issue of the Alsic journal is designed around games and gaming for supporting the development of native and foreign language skills with the help of contributing sciences. In our context, the word ''learning'' applies to foreign language context as well as native language contexts, often referred to as acquisition. This issue intends to explore how various areas of expertise can inform each other with state-of-the-art knowledge to support exploration of new perspectives. Combining cross-disciplinary know-how will be key to game design with academic content and observed learning outcomes.

The following proposed non-exclusive list of topics, linked to games or gaming, should be interrelated in this special issue across the submissions but not necessarily within a single paper:
- Acquisition
- Learning Content and Sequencing
- Corpora
- Cultural Awareness

- Learning curves, Outcomes and Evaluation
- L1 versus L2
- Linguistics
- Literacy
- Natural Language Processing
- Infrastructure Engineering (like automatic data processing or software engineering)
- Scenario
- Skills

We will accept two types of papers. Either, contributions that already show some interdisciplinary work or those that help to enable future interdisciplinary work. Some examples could be the following: Text simplification algorithms based on speech technology and corpora may constitute underlying technology for vocabulary building. Acquisition theory from psychology (theory) combined with corpus exploration (data driven learning [Boulton 2017]) can serve as the foundation for content sequencing. Cognitive processing or brain measurements during reading may inform gamified e-Reading application displays and highlighting support for the readers. Finally, examples of collaboration between software engineers, linguists, and language acquisition experts with game developers may result in effective language learning games that no single discipline would have been able to produce on their own. All such examples would constitute valid entries to this issue.

Recommendations:
The articles should not exceed 9000 words. Please, provide 3-5 keywords and an abstract in the language of the article as well as its translation into another language. (one of these should be in English).
