The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to work with Dr Claire Childs (Principal Investigator) on her AHRC Research, Development and Engagement Fellowship, ‘Interactions in Grammatical Systems: North-South Dialect Variation in England’. This project aims to uncover structural interactions between different grammatical phenomena in varieties of English, examining how they pattern geographically and on linguistic and social dimensions.

The successful applicant will start on 1 October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is full-time and fixed-term for 9 months.

You will work under the direction of Dr Claire Childs to arrange, design and conduct sociolinguistic interviews with members of the public in four English cities: Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Nottingham and Southampton. You must be willing to travel to these sites in order to collect data, with short stays (depending on the distance). You will also transcribe audio recordings and assist in extracting, coding and analysing grammatical data. You will also collaborate with the PI on impact activities arising from the project including engaging teachers in a questionnaire pilot and developing materials for the University of York’s Massive Online Open Course, ‘An Introduction to Sociolinguistics: Accents, Attitudes and Identity’.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications Needed:
- PhD in Linguistics or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Experience of conducting research in sociolinguistics or a related field, including collecting data from participants and extracting, coding and analysing linguistic data.
- Willingness to travel within England for day trips and some short stays, to collect data.
- Ability to arrange and record sociolinguistic interviews with members of the public (previous experience desirable).
- Ability to transcribe recordings with a high level of accuracy (previous experience desirable).
- Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with a range of audiences.
