Job Title: Research Fellow

Specialty Areas: Morphology; Phonology; Typology

Description:

The Surrey Morphology Group in the School of Literature and Languages, University of Surrey, is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral Research Fellow at the fractional rate of 0.8FTE (equivalent to 4 days per week) for one year, funded by a British Academy Global Professorship awarded to Prof. Erich Round. The position is to start to on 1 July 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. We welcome applicants from within and outside the UK.

The project investigates the dynamics of analogical change in morphological paradigms, with a particular view to modelling change and its outcomes, and situating the work within theories of change within and outside of linguistics. As a crucial part of this, we seek to build a typology of previous proposals on analogy—what are the kinds of factors and interaction between them proposed by generations of linguists working on the topic?—and to identify empirical case studies that have been, or could yet be, influential.

The successful applicant is expected to have a PhD (gained or under examination) in morphology and/or phonology with a substantial typological component, either synchronic or diachronic; have a demonstrated strength in surveying and critically comparing theoretical and empirical literature in morphology and/or phonology; research experience in language typology; and an ability to excel in, and contribute to, a collegial team environment. Desirable strengths are research experience in: analysing large cross-linguistic datasets; compiling and/or processing cross-linguistic datasets; using a programming language such as R or python to assist in data compilation, processing and analysis; performing statistical analysis; and presentation and publication of research papers and/or datasets.

The position involves conducting research both independently and with the project team. The successful applicant will work closely with the project leader, within the vibrant and supportive environment at the Surrey Morphology Group. The Research Fellow will contribute to novel analyses and curated datasets, and present the results of this work at conferences and in publications, together with the project team.

The Surrey Morphology Group (SMG) is the world’s largest research group focussing on linguistic morphology. With over twenty-five years of outstanding research success, the group is an ideal environment to build your competence and achievements as a researcher. At the heart of the group’s ethos are a deep fidelity to the empirical diversity of the world’s languages, the rigorous pursuit of challenging theoretical questions, and the nurturing of its members in a high stimulating, collegial and intellectually engaging research environment.

Interested applicants are encouraged to view the SMG website (https://www.smg.surrey.ac.uk/) and contact Erich Round at the contact information below, with informal questions about the project, position and working at SMG.
