We live in a globalised and multicultural world with a growing importance of social media for social exchanges. The use of social media can have a positive influence on the development of intercultural friendships, as Mas'udah (2017) shows. Intercultural communication (or interculturality in the broadest sense) and social media are closely linked, not only in the private sphere but also in educational contexts. Mouhadjer (2018), for example, highlights the role that social media play in the development of intercultural competence among students. Indeed, new technologies can facilitate access to different cultures and create virtual spaces of trust and exchange. Jakubowski (2018) highlights the scientific richness and enormous possibilities of media studies and intercultural communication, as social networks allow researchers, especially from the disciplines of linguistics and sociology, to access a large database to analyse interculturality within society. These examples show that the interaction between social networks and interculturality has already been studied. Nevertheless, there are still new areas of reflection that need to be explored. So far, work linking the two aforementioned concepts and the working environment is rare, even though many companies have, for example, a Facebook or Instagram account to communicate with their customers (Godey et al. 2016, Carah & Shaul 2016, Portmann 2020). Social media also find application in cross-cultural marketing (Mavragani et al., 2019). Social media undoubtedly facilitate the access to new markets. Especially in a globalised world, interculturality does not disappear, it may even become more important when dealing with potential customers, employees and employers with different cultural backgrounds.
The analysis of the interdependencies of these three terms - ''interculturality'', ''social networks'' and ''working environment'' - seems particularly fruitful and will therefore be the subject of a conference entitled ''Interculturality, social networks and the working environment'', which will be held in cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau and the University of Grenoble Alpes.
2nd Call for Papers:
The contributions of the conference aim to explore the links between these three concepts and may address questions such as:
- How are social networks used in the business context (promotional purposes, company-customer relations, product representation...)?
- How do these uses help to shape interactions and establish new forms of communication?
- What differences can be observed depending on different language and cultural contexts?
- How do social networks reflect professional practices (sharing of expertise, jargon, terminology, etc.)?
- What strategies and discursive goals are used to maintain social relations in this context?
The three-day conference will take place on 14, 15 and 16 June 2022 in Zwickau, Germany.
Interested researchers are invited to submit papers (in German, French or English) of about 250 words, together with a short biographical note. Our starting point is the disciplines of linguistics, media and intercultural communication, but an approach to these concepts in the light of other disciplines is also welcome.
