With great sadness we announce the passing of Claire Benjamins, beloved wife of John Benjamins and mother of Seline and Mirjam. Together with John, Claire founded John Benjamins Publishing Co. from scratch some fifty years ago. The specialization of the house in linguistics was incidental but this did not prevent the publishing house from developing into a truly global brand in this field. From the start Claire showed great interest in language and in particular language and the workings of the brain. Her infectious warmth, her boundless enthusiasm, and immense energy attracted many well-known linguists to the house and likewise motivated staff over the years. For decades Claire was a real multi-talented powerhouse who managed to successfully combine the editorial directorship, steering the production arm of the company, and practically single-handedly overseeing the complex accountancy. In those pioneering days a half century ago Claire laid the groundwork for what would later develop into the current international publishing house.
