Meeting Description:

The multidisciplinary KLAARA conference is the venue for researchers interested in the study of EtR languages and accessible communication. The conference aims to advance research and networking on modified language used for communication with people who have various difficulties in understanding standard forms of language. Studies from different disciplinary perspectives (social sciences, linguistics, special education, visual communication, translation studies, information design) will be presented and discussed.

After the successful launch of the KLAARA Conference on easy-to-read (EtR) language research in Helsinki 2019, the second international KLAARA conference was originally planned for 2020. Due to Covid-19 it has been postponed to August 30/31 2021. It takes place in Olten, Switzerland.

Call for Papers:

Studies from different disciplinary perspectives will be presented and discussed, as e.g. social sciences, linguistics, special education, translation studies, visual communication and information design. Contributions may be addressing topics as for example principles and standards, text types, target groups, services, user participation and text checking, instructions and cooperation with text owners, education in/on EtR, language policy, empirical verification of guidelines, methods etc. Moreover, it can be assumed that the situation around the corona pandemic has given rise to further research projects because new needs in the field of communication have become apparent.

Persons from whom an abstract has already been accepted will be informed individually for further proceedings.

In addition, the conference organizers invite abstracts for further section papers, posters and workshops. Section papers and posters should be based on completed or research in progress. Workshops may also be aiming to connect people on new topics or provisional ideas.

Abstracts must be maximum 300 words, excluding references. For papers und posters they should articulate: the objectives or questions being addressed; the conceptual or theoretical perspectives informing the work; where appropriate, the methodology; and the contribution to knowledge in light of the conference topics. Workshop proposals should include: the workshop purpose and its relationship to the conference topics; details of the program and the expected contribution of the workshop.
