The School of Languages and Cultures has grown rapidly in recent years and now has over 1400 EFTSL (11,000 course enrolments). It is one of the largest Schools of language instruction in Australia with over 45 academic staff. The School teaches Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and English as an International Language (EIL), as well as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, to students in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies, the university-wide concurrent Diploma in Languages, the Diploma of Arts, and dual degree programs.

At postgraduate level the School offers two NAATI-accredited Masters programs in Translation and Interpreting (one in Japanese and one in Chinese) and a large Masters program in Applied Linguistics. Staff research and supervise PhD students in a diverse range of fields relating to languages and cultures.

The Linguistics Program aims to develop theoretical knowledge and analytic skills in two inter-related strands of the Linguistics discipline that feature key research strengths in the School: the structure of language (e.g. through the study of speech sounds, word and sentence structural patterns), and the use of language (e.g. through the study of language variability, language as action, and conversation analysis). There is a strong emphasis on Australian Indigenous languages in the teaching and research programs in linguistics.

About This Opportunity:
The School is looking to appoint a Lecturer in Endangered Languages in the process of extending its international research profile in an area of relevance to the current teaching and research profile of the linguistics program.

Individuals with research and teaching interests in one or more of the following areas of linguistics are especially encouraged to apply: Australian Indigenous languages, Indigenous language maintenance and revitalisation, learning and teaching of Indigenous languages.

Research interests in one or more of the languages taught in the school would also be advantageous.

The successful appointee will engage in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision, undertake and contribute to further development of the School’s Linguistics program, as well as performing research, service/engagement and other activities associated with the School.

Our Ideal Candidate:
Applicants should possess a PhD in Linguistics or related fields. The applicant should also have demonstrated expertise and experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching. The applicant should also have a record of high quality research publications appropriate to the level of the appointment.

You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

What We Can Offer:
This is a full-time, continuing position at Academic level B.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD$99,542 - $118,206, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range AUD$116,465 - $138,301.
