Description:

The DFG-funded Emmy Noether Group on “Grammatical Strength in Prosodic Morphology: Typology and Theory” at the Linguistics Department, Leipzig University, seeks to fill three PhD positions.

About the positions:
- starting date: February 1, 2023
- fixed term of three years
- 65 % of a full-time position (salary group 13 TV-L)

The Emmy Noether Group “Grammatical Strength in Prosodic Morphology: Typology and Theory” investigates the hypothesis that the phonological grammar of human languages is based on elements with gradient activity; phonological elements can thus be ‘stronger’ or ‘weaker’ and consequently show different phonological behaviour. It focusses on three empirical areas that are particularly relevant for such a strength-based model:
- lexical accent system with competition between accented morphemes,
- complex morphological tone systems, and
- morphologically distinct foot templates.

We are looking for students who are enthusiastic about both phonological theory and empirical work since the project aims to provide both
- empirical studies and the development of databases of strength-related phenomena within the area of lexical accent systems, tonal morphology, and template morphology, and
- theoretical analyses of grammatical strength phenomena.

The Linguistics Department at Leipzig University provides an excellent research environment and the PhD students in the Emmy Noether Group will particularly profit from the interactions with both the DFG-funded graduate school on "Interaction of Grammatical Building Blocks" and the DFG-funded research unit on "Cyclic Optimization“.

Tasks and responsibilities:
- empirical investigation of typological data on grammatical strength in Prosodic Morphology (focus on lexical accent systems, tonal morphology and template morphology)
- theoretical analyses of grammatical strength phenomena in theoretical phonology and morphology

Requirements:
- master degree (or equivalent) in linguistics or a closely related field
- advanced knowledge in phonology and theoretical linguistics
- strong interest for both theoretical and typological work

Application:
- deadline: November 21, 2022
- documents: cover letter, CV, statement of purpose, two work samples (e.g. MA thesis or term paper), and two letters of recommendation
- sent as a single PDF file to eva.zimmermannuni-leipzig.de
