Focus: Empirical studies on the representation, processing and acquisition of three French-based Creoles- Guadeloupean, Haitian and Martinican Creoles; combination of STEM research skills and ability to conduct research in different geographical and cultural environments; international student collaboration.

Special Qualifications: Applications from undergraduate and graduate (Masters and Doctoral) students enrolled in programs in African-American/Black/Caribbean Studies, Cognitive Science, Computational Sciences, Education, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Psychology, Speech-Language-Hearing-Communication Sciences are welcome! Students who will obtain their degree in May/June 2022 are eligible.

Description:
The IRES Track Experimental Linguistics in the Caribbean is recruiting talented undergraduate and graduate students residing in the U.S. from (but not limited to) historically minoritized groups to partake in a full-time 7 week program (June 13 to July 31 2022) to engage in research in experimental linguistics and to benefit from training to conduct research in diverse socio-cultural, geographic and linguistic environments.

Applications from undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in programs in African-American/Black/Caribbean Studies, Cognitive Science, Computational Sciences, Education, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Psychology, Speech-Language-Hearing-Communication Sciences are welcome!
Modalities & Locations:

1 week online, 1 week at Molloy College, LI, NY and 5 weeks in Guadeloupe



The stay in Guadeloupe will also include experiencing Antilles culture through sightseeing and fieldwork in collaboration with Guadeloupean and Martinican students.
Objective: Combining scientific and global/international experience

Despite growing awareness in the need for diversity in Higher Education, progress is impeded by the iota of minorities enrolled in linguistic-oriented disciplines. This seven-week program will address this limitation by equipping students with a combination STEM-based and cross-cultural and linguistic skills to conduct research projects in different environments that they will be able to subsequently use to succeed in their academic and professional careers.
Implementation of the program for US students

Module A: Linguistic analyses applied to French-based Creoles (focus on Guadeloupian and Haitian Creoles); ethical training to conduct research in different environments (online and in New York)

Module B: Developing and improving cultural and language competencies (including learning or improving Guadeloupian Creole and/or Haitian Creole) (online, in New York and in Guadeloupe)

Module C: Designing research projects and preparing the data collection (in New York and in Guadeloupe)

Module D: Collecting data (in Guadeloupe)

Module E: Processing and Interpreting the data (in Guadeloupe)

Module F: Sharing and disseminating the findings online (in Guadeloupe

Financial Aid: Applications accepted until 31-Mar-2022
Travel expenses to and from NYC and to and from Guadeloupe, Insurance, accommodation in NYC and Guadeloupe, subsistence in NYC and Guadeloupe are fully covered. Participants will also receive a $1,500 stipend.
