Special Qualifications: The Summer School is open to everyone interested in languages and writing systems of Asia, particularly Thailand and China. Participants need not have prior knowledge of Thai and/or Chinese but such knowledge will make the learning experience more fruitful. Basic knowledge of linguistics is recommended to be able to follow the courses. The language of instruction is English, so sufficient communicative skills in English are required.
Description:
The Summer School in “Language and Writing across Asia: Historical and Current Trends” is organised in partnership between Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University; Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki; and Faculty of Archaeology, Silpakorn University. It deals with history, typology, application and current trends in the studies of language and writing across Asia, focusing on Thailand and China.
Five different courses are offered on the following themes:
- Creating writing systems for languages in Thailand
- Studying and preserving ancient manuscripts in Thailand
- Deciphering the Shang Chinese language and writing
- Exploring typological diversity of languages and writings in China
- Introduction to Tangut language
Participants can customise their personal programme by combining courses of their interest from one up to three courses.
Given an uncertain and unpredictable global pandemic situation, the Summer School will take place in a hybrid mode enabling both virtual and physical participation.
