Subject: 1998 Summer Programs in Japan and Korea

The National Science Foundation (NSF), in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), welcomes applications to the 1998 Summer Programs in Japan and Korea. All qualified graduate students in science and engineering, including the biomedical, agricultural, and social sciences, are urged to apply. The postmark deadline for applications is December 1, 1997.

The three summer programs (Summer Institute in Japan, Summer Institute in Korea, and the Monbusho Summer Program) provide participants first-hand experience in Japanese or Korean research environments, an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure of the respective countries, and language training. The primary goals of the programs are to introduce students to Japanese or Korean science and engineering in the context of a research laboratory and to initiate personal relationships that will better enable them to collaborate with Japanese or Korean counterparts in the future. Each of the three summer programs will last approximately eight weeks from late June 1998 to late August 1998.

For more information on the Summer Programs, including eligibility requirements, program descriptions, and application materials, access the NSF/Tokyo Homepage (http://www.twics.com/~nsftokyo/summer98.html). If further questions remain after review of these materials, please contact the NSF Japan and Korea Program (jkpinfonsf.gov).
