    Summary:

    Below is a brief description of Fulbright grants for U.S. citizens to engage in lecturing and advanced research worldwide. These grants are excellent professional development opportunities and provide funding to pursue professional interests abroad.



    FULBRIGHT GRANTS FOR U.S. FACULTY AND PROFESSIONALS

    Description:

    Over 700 awards for college and university faculty and nonacademic professionals to lecture or pursue advanced research and/or related professional activity abroad. For U.S. candidates, grants are available in over 120 countries.

    Application Deadline:

    U.S. candidates have an August 1 deadline for lecturing or research awards. Non-U.S. candidates apply in their home country for awards to come to the United States.

    Areas of Interest:

    Opportunities exist in every area of the social sciences, arts and humanities, sciences, and many professional fields. Fulbright-supported activities include undergraduate and graduate teaching, individual advanced research, joint research collaboration, and more.

    Basic Eligibility Requirements:

    Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree at the time of application and U.S. citizenship (permanent residency is not sufficient).

    For professionals and artists outside academe, recognized professional standing comparable to that associated with the doctorate in higher education is required, unless otherwise noted in the individual award description. College or university teaching experience is expected at the level and in the field of the advertised assignment or proposed lecturing activity for lecturing and combined lecturing/research awards.

    Grant Duration:

    Awards range in duration from two months to twelve months. Most lecturing assignments are for an academic term/semester or a full academic year.

    Language:

    Foreign language proficiency may be expected as specified in the award description or as required for the completion of the proposed lecturing or research project.

    The majority of teaching assignments are in English. The major exceptions are Central and South America, where Spanish is usually required, and francophone Africa, where one is expected to be fluent in French.

    AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR APPLIED LINGUISTICS

    STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE LSA SUMMER INSTITUTE

    Purpose:

    AAAL is pleased to announce that an award is available for a student enrolled in a graduate program leading to a degree in any area of Applied Linguistics who will be taking courses at the LSA Summer Institute from June 23 - August 1st 1997 at Cornell University.

    The award is intended to aid a graduate student member of AAAL to take part in the summer institute where several applied linguistics courses are being offered. The award will provide the student with financial assistance for travel and living expenses while at the institute. A list of courses being offered at the institute may be obtained via the Web: http://www.sce.cornell.edu/CUSS/LSA.html, or by writing to the Linguistic Institute, Dept. of Linguistics, Morrill Hall, Cornell University,Ithaca, NY 14853-4701. The deadline for registering for courses is April 15th 1997 or May 15th 1997 if a late fee is paid.

    The amount of the Award will be no less than $700. [AAAL will announce the exact amount after 15th April 1997.] Students who are interested in being considered for this award should follow the guidelines set out below.

    Selection Criteria:

    1. Membership of AAAL.

    2. Attendance and registration at the LSA Summer Institute.

    3. Present scholarship and future promise.

    4. Involvement in Applied Linguistics and commitment to the field. Application Procedure:

    For full consideration students should submit the following documents by May 15th 1997. The documents must arrive in the AAAL office by this date. (That is not be post-marked May 15th 1997.)

    1. A statement of why he/she will benefit from attendance at the LSA Institute. The candidate may also wish to submit a current CV.

    2. The most recent transcript from his/her home institution.

    3. TWO letters of recommendation from professors familiar with his/her work.
