SUMMER LANGUAGE COURSES IN CUZCO - 1997

    QUECHUA, AYMARA AND SPANISH Cuzco-PERU, 1 July - 15 August 1997

    Colegio Universitario Andino, cbc

INTRODUCTION The Program of the University Andean College of the Bartolome de Las Casas Center offers intensive language courses of Quechua, Aimara and Spanish. Quechua and Aimara languages are spoken by millions of people in the Andean space and involve a millenary historical past. At present, these languages deserve a new social space and have presence in the cities, schools and other centers of study, as well as in the means of communication and in the writing level in general terms. Therefore, it is important to promote the learning and use of these Andean languages. Spanish is a language that each time acquires more international importance, and is one of the most common languages in the world. Its presence is specially significant in Latin America, where it coexists with Quechua, Aymara and other Amerindian languages. Foreigners, specially the ones interested in Andean and Latin American subjects, will find in our courses the communicative tools they need. Through language teaching, the University Andean College seeks to develop the communicative aptitudes of the students in order to break the linguistic barriers and motivate the equitable exchange among individuals and human groups.

    DESCRIPTION

GENERAL OBJECTIVE The courses have as general objective the development of communicative and linguistic abilities of comprehension and expression, at oral and written level. Return

LEVELS The differentiation of levels allows a gradual and dosed advance in teaching and learning. The basic level introduces the participants of the course in the main communicative interactions enabling them to linguistically locate themselves in space and time, and to dialogue with their interlocutors. The intermediate level consolidates what is learned in a basic level and implies more abilities in the interpretation and in the production of the oral tradition and literature. The advanced level leads to a fluent and correct use of the various types of discourse by stimulating conversation and text analysis of oral tradition and literature. Return

INTENSIVE MODE The courses are intensive. Classes are given from Monday to Friday, 4 hours per day, that makes a total of 20 hours per week and 140 hours during the whole cycle. Besides the teaching hours, each participant shall carry out activities and exercises. Return

ADDRESSEES The courses of Quechua and Aymara are addressed to professionals, graduated people, agents of development, researchers, and everyone interested in the acquisition of competence in said languages. The course of Spanish language is oriented to the foreign language speakers, specially professionals, graduated students or researchers. Return

TEACHERS The Quechua, Aymara and Spanish teachers, besides their complete dominion of the language which is their mother tongue, have received a specialized training and experience in language teaching. Return

METHODOLOGY The departure point is a motivating subject, posed by a suggesting communicative situation. A series of exercises is generated leading to the comprehension of the message and the acquisition of the grammar structures and procedures. Therefore, our teaching methodology involves the following moments: - communicative situations, favoring the active participation of the students; - reinforcing of the competence acquired through the practices and exercises; - offering of the grammar principles and mechanisms of the language use Individual and group work spaces have been programmed. We use as pedagogic resources audiovisual material, songs, dramatizations and games.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES Language is related to culture and society, therefore, language learning shall be complemented with extension activities. We have also organized conferences about archaeology, art and culture of the Andean societies, visits to archaeological sites, museums, social activities and popular festivities.
