Lecturer in Japanese

The East Asian Studies Department at the University of Durham (UK)
seeks a Lecturer in Japanese Language / Literature / Linguistics from
1 October 1998. The candidate will normally teach between 8 and 10
contact hours a week and will be in charge of the first-year Japanese
language programme (choosing texts, training part-time teachers,
co-ordinating writing, grammar and conversation aspects of the
programme). A strong research record or proven research ability is
essential, and the Lecturer will be expected to fully participate in
Departmental examining and administration.

Central to teaching will be 3 hrs/week of explaining Japanese grammar
in English to first year students; hence explicit (rather than
intuitive, native-speaker) knowledge of Japanese grammar is
essential. The further contact hours may include 5 chosen from among
Classical Japanese (2 hrs), Classical literature (2 hrs), teaching
Japanese as a foreign language (2 hrs), translating and interpreting
(2 hrs), Modern Japanese literature (1-2 hrs), or linguistic structure
of Japanese (1 hr).

Preference may be given to a Ph.D. in hand. The job is suitable for
language, literature or linguistic specialists. Initial appointment
will be made on the Lecturer grade A scale (16,045 to 21,016 per
annum) according to qualifications and experience.

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and the Program
in Linguistics at the University of Michigan have received
authorization of a joint position in Germanic and Linguistics at the
Assistant Professor level, to begin in September, 1998.
Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate
courses in sociolinguistics and dialectology, and service on graduate
examination and dissertation committees. Ph.D. must be completed by
September 1, 1998. Evidence of excellent teaching and research
