    II INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL OF TERMINOLOGY 5 - 9 July 1999 Direction: M. Teresa Cabre Terminology lectures given by the teachers from the IULATERM group. There are both theoretical sessions and applied workshops, adressed to anyone interested in this field. Price: 50.000 PTA. There is a limited number of participants.     II INTERNATIONAL MONOGRAPHIC SYMPOSIUM OF TERMINOLOGY The specialized knowledge transfer 13 - 16 July 1999 Director: M. Teresa Cabre Symposium composed of a number of specialized seminars and a final discussion. It is adressed to terminology teachers and researchers. These sessions are run by scholars of worlwide renown: Anna Estany, specialist in science theory (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona), Daniele Dubois, specialist in cognitive psychology and language (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and Rita Temermann, specialist in sociocognitive terminology (Erasmushogeshool, Brussels).     TERMINOLOGY WORKSHOP OF THE ASOCIACION ESPANOLA DE TERMINOLOGIA (AETER) Monday, 12 July 1999 Organization: M. Natividad Garcia (CL Servicios Linguisticos) and M. Teresa Cabre (IULA). Discussion on the current situation of terminology in Spain: fundamental and applied terminology production, terminology management and terminology standardization.     Announcement of a Web site with sound clips from ex-slave recordings:

    At the NWAVE meeting this month, I demonstrated a Web site that contains sound clips from the ex-slave recordings. One of the producers of the radio documentary, "Remembering Slavery," asked me to create a Web site for the project. As part of that work, I wanted to make examples of the ex-slave recordings available to faculty and students. You will also find a brief explanation about the background of the Works Projects Administration narratives and the Archive of Folk Song recordings. I hope that you will find the Web site interesting and useful.

    You don't need a special program or plug-in to your browser to play the sound clips. You only need a Java enabled browser such as Netscape 3.0/Internet Explorer 3.0 or a later version of these browsers.

    Brown University's Departments of Applied Mathematics, Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences, and Computer Science announce a new interdisciplinary graduate training program in:

    LEARNING AND ACTION IN THE FACE OF UNCERTAINTY: COGNITIVE, COMPUTATIONAL AND STATISTICAL APPROACHES

    Deadline for Applications: January 1, 1999

    Brown University is actively recruiting graduate students for a new NSF-supported Interdisciplinary Graduate Education, Research and Training (IGERT) program in "Learning and Action in the Face of Uncertainty: Cognitive, Computational and Statistical Approaches".

    The use of probabilistic models and statistical methods has had a major impact on our understanding of language, vision, action, and reasoning. This training program provides students with the opportunity to integrate a detailed study of human or artificial systems for language acquisition and use, visual processing, action, and reasoning with appropriate mathematical and computational models. Students will be enrolled in one of the three participating departments (Applied Mathematics, Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences, and Computer Science) and will study an interdisciplinary program of courses in topics such as statistical estimation, cognitive processes, linguistics, and computational models. The aim of this program is to provide promising students with a mix of mathematical, computational and experimental expertise to carry out multidisciplinary collaborative research across the disciplines of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and Cognitive Science.
