"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Job Description: Virginia Tech is a research-extensive university that enrolls more than 30,000 students. The Department of English at Virginia Tech invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in sociolinguistics, subject to budgetary approval, to begin August 2013.
Required:
- Ph.D. in hand by 1 August 2013
- Ability to teach Discourse Analysis at the graduate level in addition to general linguistics and sociolinguistics at the undergraduate level.

Preferred:
- Background in experimental phonetics
- Teaching/working with diverse populations.

Responsibilities include serving on committees and advising students.
