"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Job Description: The English Department in the Faculty of Linguistics, Literary and Cultural Studies (Humanities II) at Saarland University invites applications for a tenured full professor position (pay scale W3) in English philology - linguistics.

The successful candidate will be responsible for academic duties in research and teaching in the entire field of English linguistics. A focus on one or more core areas of present-day English linguistics is desirable. Applicants will be required to contribute to all courses of study offered by the English department (BA, MA, teacher training). Candidates are also expected to contribute actively, both in teaching and research, to the university’s research priorities, especially its focus on Europe. They are required to have experience in the acquisition of outside funding and in university self-governing. Cooperation with partners in the Greater Region SaarLorLux will be supported in the framework of the “University of the Greater Region” (with the partner universities University of Luxembourg, University of Liège, University of Lorraine, University of Kaiserslautern and University of Trier, with a total of around 115,000 students and 6,000 teachers and researchers).

Applicants must have a university degree and a doctorate as well as a habilitation or equivalent research in the post-doctoral phase. A working knowledge of German is expected.
