Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Notice: I am working on a project for a small company that offers music classes for children. The kids in the classes learn songs from cultures around the world, and also learn to say hello and goodbye in the language of each culture. I am conducting short interviews to collect audio recordings of greetings and basic biographical information from speakers of as many languages as I can find. The recordings and speaker profiles will be included on the web site of the company, All Around This World. In particular I'm looking for speakers of less widely spoken languages (i.e those other than Mandarin, Spanish, English, Arabic, Hindi) including minority indigenous languages and creoles.

Participation is quick and easy, and it's a fun way for people to share a bit of their culture with little kids. Interviews take about five minutes and may be done in person in New York or Philadelphia, or online using skype. Please contact me if you or someone you know is interested in participating, and feel free to forward this message on to others.
