Abstract: This thesis looks at the Afrikaans of L2 teachers in the Qwa-Qwa area (South Africa) and how the interlanguage of these teachers is transferred to the pupils. A contrastive analysis was done to establish the differences between the L1 (Sesotho) and the L2 (Afrikaans) of these teachers. The hypothesis of the thesis is that the interlanguage is fossilized and transferred to learners of the L2. These learners become students at university and it is noted by lecturers at the University of Qwa-Qwa that there are similarities between the interlanguage of the teachers and the students. This has the implication that continuous language transfer can eventually lead to a situation of fossilization; not only of the individual's interlanguage, but that of the whole speech community.
