Abstract: This thesis consists in the systematic observation of a certain number of
sense values of the marker to, with regard to its use as a preposition in
present-day English. The marker to is often associated with a dynamic
aspect and has frequently been interpreted as a marker of prospective
validation. Set against the theoretical background of the Théorie des
Opérations Enonciatives (Theory of Enunciative Operations), elaborated by
Antoine Culioli, our analysis suggests that the functioning of the marker
can be accounted for by way of two basic operations, identification and
disconnection. The different meanings associated with the marker (as
introducer of a final location, a beneficiary or even a particular result)
are thus the product of the interaction between the operations marked by to
and the syntactic and semantic properties in the context and its various
elements. Factors such as the syntactic and semantic properties of the
terms connected by to, their functionality, the type of process invoked in
the utterance, and the relationship's locator all contribute to the
contextual emergence of interpretative changes.
