|Abstract:||Research purpose: to reveal typological differences and similarities
between reduplicative units in Belarusian, Russian and English by
identifying peculiarities of their structure, functions and rendering.
Research methods: comparative and contrastive analysis, Veitch – Karnaugh
map method, derivational analysis as well as some elements of set-theory
analysis, statistical analysis and componential method.
Research results and their significance. The performed comprehensive
analysis is the first known comparison of Belarusian reduplicative
formations with those in Russian and English. The author compiles
reduplicative corpora of three languages, explores phono-morphological
features of full, ablaut and rhymed reduplicative words and word forms,
identifies derivational models of universal reduplicative formations and
classifies them into thematic groups. The author also estimates the
probability density of reduplicative units, reveals their stylistic
functions, describes ways and methods of translating reduplicative words
and word forms, devises a translation algorithm as well as compiles a
trilingual dictionary of core modern English reduplicative vocabulary
with its cross-linguistic correspondences in Russian and Belarusian.
Recommendations for applying research results. Theoretical and practical
outcomes of this research can be used in typological studies of
reduplication, textbooks and handbooks on contrastive linguistics,
word-formation, lexicology, stylistics, translation and interpretation as
well as coursebooks dedicated to speech and written practice of the
Belarusian, Russian and English languages. Reduplicative corpora can be
used while compiling translation and defining dictionaries as well as
utilized in educational processes (while preparing lectures, special
academic courses and producing term papers and final-year projects).
