It publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed open-access articles in the field of second language research. Its aim is to promote the understanding of second language learning and use, and to stimulate the debate on the bilingual and multilingual individual and society. JESLA publishes one issue per year comprising the best papers from the EuroSLA annual conference.

The scope of the journal covers fundamental and applied issues in second language learning, in children, adolescents and adults; second / bilingual language use and processing, language representation, bilingual cognition, as well as second language assessment and education. JESLA welcomes empirical, theoretical and methodological research papers, including meta-analyses. No specific theories or approaches are given preference.
