Linguistic Field: Morphology
Subject Language: English
Abstract: The paper focuses on some problematic aspects, both at the theoretical and at the practical level, with respect to certain Romanian moods and tenses with aspectual and modal values and the possibility of firmly establishing their equivalents in English. The author favours a theoretical frame that facilitates learning and the practice of the most appropriate matches of equivalent expressions of modality in two or several languages – Romanian and English in this particular case – and illustrates her point through remarks concerning conditional-optative constructions, the several aspectual and modal values of the Romanian imperfect and their respective English equivalents and a parallel treatment of some forms of the Romanian mood called prezumtiv and their corresponding English equivalents./L//L/Rather than favouring a complicated classificatory and terminological scheme that would be hard to handle, the author pleads for training students in translation / interpreting / foreign language teaching (the English-Romanian and Romanian-English domains) towards an increased awareness of the possible structural and semantic parallels between English and Romanian that would speed up the process of establishing correct equivalents in context.
