Abstract: Multilingualism is an expression of the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of the Caribbean region (Balutansky & Sourieau, 1998). This linguistic plurality is associated with a common colonial legacy which has brought together ethnolinguistically diverse peoples and has shaped a unique cross-Caribbean diglossic landscape. Caribbean linguistic diversity is characterised by the emergence of creoles in informal social interactions within each Caribbean island country and the adoption of colonial languages in politics, trade and education for trans-national communication. This paper shows how diglossia is a manifestation of vivid sociolinguistic diversity in each Caribbean country and promotes a unique pan-Caribbean composite cultural identity. /L//L/It is argued here that this composite identity can be enhanced by supporting equitable culturally sensitive language policies which would include, on one hand, widespread formal teaching/learning of the major official languages of the Caribbean for promoting regional sociocultural integration and for supporting market-driven globalisation, and on the other, the recognition of vernaculars, patois and creoles as vehicles of continued cultural transmission and maintenance.
