Abstract: This paper discusses the teaching of Modern Standard Arabic to Moroccan pupils in Dutch elementary schools. The research findings show that this type of education can be successful if the target pupils have had the opportunity to attend lessons in Modern Standard Arabic uninterruptedly during their whole elementary school period. In this respect, the study yields positive results, in particular when these are compared to the rather gloomy results of other studies dealing with this kind of teaching.
