Linguistic Field: Lexicography
Subject Language: English
Abstract: Proverb dictionaries often include idioms and proverbial phrases. The present article examines dictionaries that codify exlusively or mainly proverbs. Proverb dictionaries, chiefly of German and of English, are analysed according to their macro-, micro and mediostructure. The description of the methods, how the proverb stock of dictionaries is selected and arranged, is followed by the discussion of their lemmatization considering proverb variants. Most users of proverb dictionaries are not likely satisfied with just the codification of the proverb form. They might be interested in what kind of information about proverbs can be found in dictionaries. Finally, the system of references is to be examined, whether proverb dictionaries have several reference structures.
