Linguistic Field: Discourse Analysis
Subject Language: English
Abstract: Language and Masculinity/L//L/This paper explores the relation between language and masculinity in the context of broader Language and Gender research. The contribution provides detailed insights into this relation at different levels of linguistic analysis: (i) the phonetic and phonological; (ii) the morphosyntactic; (iii) the lexical-semantic; (iv) the discursive; and (v) the kinesic and paralinguistic. In particular, the analysis of the masculine at the discursive level (iv) takes into consideration such categories as speech acts, linguistic politeness and conversation analysis. The construction of masculinity in conversation examines specific categories in turn such as turn-taking, interruptions and overlaps, minimal responses, conversational silences, conversational topics, discourse markers, verbosity and topic control.
