Abstract: In the following article the morphological category of number is initially analyzed theoretically. Following a preliminary definition of this category the different manifestations of the category of number in German is being described and analyzed.
Applying a contrastive perspective the category of number in German is compared to the corresponding category in Jemez, in Hebrew and to a language spoken on the island of Annatom in Melanesia.
In a further chapter the acquisition of number is described on the basis of Petit (1999).
The second, empirical part of the article focusses on Kim (1994) who described the difficulties of Korean learners of German in the acquisition of number. Kim analyzed the language acquisition of advanced adult learners of German.
