Abstract: This paper suggests an effective approach to teaching Modern Greek grammar in Greek secondary education by reporting on a case study. Teaching the so-called 'particles' in the third grade of the gymnasium of a state school has been selected to exemplify the theoretical framework of structural, functional, and communicative grammar, since this pedagogical dimension has been largely overlooked./L//L/The overriding concern of this case study has been not only to provide answers to specific research questions, but also to suggest improvements. Data for this purpose were gathered through classroom observations, questionnaires, as well as teacher and learner interviews. The learners’ views tended to lead to the main conclusion that analysis of communication patterns should be the starting point in first language teaching. This should be followed by the treatment of syntactic and semantic relationships between words (functions), and the identification of grammatical categories (structures).
