Linguistic Field: Text/Corpus Linguistics; Translation
Subject Language: Greek, Modern
Abstract: This paper introduces the Greek term γλώσσωμα (plural: γλωσσώματα) to fill a gap in the translation of the term corpus into Greek. Although corpus is quite popular in other languages, especially in English, no attempt has been made to date to propose a single-word Greek equivalent. Compared to other translations (e.g., σώμα / τράπεζα (γλωσσικού) υλικού, σώμα κειμένων [literally: corpus/bank of (linguistic) material, corpus of texts], etc.), γλώσσωμα is a formally, syntactically and semantically more accurate choice of translation. Adoption and dissemination of this term would save time, space, and effort, would shed light on the meaning and etymology of the word in Greek, and would give priority to a single-word translation of the term corpus which is syntactically appropriate and formally desirable nowadays. Moreover, γλώσσωμα would help to eliminate the current confusion among different headwords for the lemma CORPUS in Modern Greek dictionaries.
