PAPER SUBMISSION SERVICE IS NOW OPEN.
DEADLINE: February 6th, 2005.
We are pleased to announce that the service for submission of papers to the
27th annual meeting of the Cognitive Science Society is now OPEN.
All submissions will be refereed electronically. We require camera-ready
paper copies only once accepted for publication. Information on electronic
submission formats can be found the submission web page:

Papers: 20-minute spoken presentations (or poster presentation); reviewed
and published as six-page papers in the Proceedings. Submission length: up
to 5000 words (6 printed pages) if no figures are included.
Review Process: Submissions for spoken papers, standard posters, and
symposia will be reviewed by these criteria: Technical/Theoretical Merit;
Relevance to a Broad Audience of Cognitive Science Researchers; Clarity of
Presentation; Significance; and Originality.

JALTCALL 2005 Conference
''Glocalization through CALL: Bringing People Together''
Ritsumeikan University, Biwako Kusatsu Campus (BKC), Shiga, Japan, 3-5

Theme:
The JALTCALL 2005 Conference focuses on the social dimension of CALL at
local and global levels, as represented by the term ''glocalization''. The
conference organising committee is specifically seeking submissions in the
following areas:
- Using CALL to encourage communication between learners at the local level
- Using CALL to encourage communication between learners globally
- Collaborative CALL research projects
- Collaborative CALL learning projects
- Local-scale CALL projects with international objectives
Submissions that do not deal directly with the conference theme are also
most welcome, provided they demonstrate a sufficient level of innovation,
quality of research, or suggestions for improvement of the field. CALL
researchers from all continents and from all CALL-related disciplines are
invited to submit applications.

Sessions:
There will be four types of sessions:
A. Paper Presentations: These are expected to include empirical studies in
a given CALL environment, theoretical discussion of an issue relevant to
the field of CALL, evaluative studies of courseware in use, discussion of
policies or strategies at an institutional, regional, or national level or
assessment of potential of technological advances in the delivery of
language learning materials.
B. Show & Tell Presentations: These are expected to be a description of a
given language learning environment, piece of software, courseware or a
practical application still in the developmental stage. There is less
expectation regarding evaluation or research issues associated with the
environment than in a paper presentation.
C. Workshops: These would include practical demonstrations on how to use
various tools or ideas for CALL-based language learning environments. They
may include commercially or freely available tools, or in some cases
individually developed materials provided there is the possibility of
participants either using the tools demonstrated or developing similar
tools for their own language learning environments.
D. Posters: These generally are used for describing a work in progress, a
theory in development or a new process or idea, although submissions beyond
this scope are also welcome.
Applications for roundtable discussions, forums, bridging discussions or
commercial presentations may be made directly by email to

Submission:
Submissions will be possible through the Japan Association for Language
Teaching CALL SIG website (
http://www.jaltcall.org) until January 31, 2005.
All papers will be vetted by an international panel of experts in a range
of disciplines within CALL. Submissions that are thought to have potential
in concept or content but do not reach the standard expected for the
JALTCALL Conference may be recommended for resubmission based on the
comments of the vetting panel.

Conference Site access:
The BKC Campus of Ritsumeikan University is easily accessible by both
public transportation or by car. It is located in Kusatsu in Shiga
Prefecture, which is just 20 minutes by local train from Kyoto Station. The
closest international airport is Kansai International Airport in Osaka.
Train services run hourly between Kansai International Airport and Kyoto,
and local trains run every 15-20 minutes from Kyoto Station to Minami
