1- SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE
The Conference aims at bringing together researchers interested in the
exploration of the role of metaphor in language and thought.
We invite abstracts on all topics related to the conference theme, including,
but not limited to:
typology of metaphor in language;
the interface metaphor- metonymy;
metaphor and electronic corpus analysis;
metaphor identification and processing;
interaction between metaphor in language and metaphor in thought;
metaphor and discourse;
metaphor, cognition and culture;
metaphor, semantics and pragmatics;
researching metaphor in use.
2- IMPORTANT DATES
Abstract submission deadline: 31 March 2005
Notification of acceptance: by 15 May 2005.
Further information on the venue, registration fee, accommodation and travel
arrangements, as well as the social program will be provided by 15 April 2005
Registration forms to be received by the committee: 31 May 2005. The
registration form will be distributed soon.
3- PROPOSALS
Paper proposals should include:
-title, author's name, academic affiliation;
-full address, including telephone/fax and e-mail;
-a 200-word abstract, which must be sent in the body of the e-mail (no
attachments, please).
The subject line should mention: ''Submission to metaphor event''
Specification of necessary audiovisual equipment: overhead projector, computer
projector, tape or video recorder, etc. Abstracts may be written in English,
Spanish, French or Portuguese. Send your paper proposal to the conference email
address: metaphor
uol.com.br including it in the body of the message (no
attachments, please). Papers may be delivered in English, Spanish, French or
Portuguese.
Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for questions.
Please note that for papers with more than one author, correspondence will be
sent to the main author's address only.
All abstracts will be refereed by the Scientific Committee.

Meeting Description:
Conference on measuring the linguistic and sociolinguistic distance between
related languages and dialects which builds on work of an earlier
conference entitled 'Des langues collatérales' held in the Université de
Picardie, Amiens, France in November 2001.
Near Languages (Collateral Languages 2), focussing on linguistic and
sociolinguistic distance, has an additional plenary lecturer and has
extended the Call deadline until 7 February 2005.
