Dissertation Abstract:

This dissertation explores the importance and effectiveness of short waveradio programs in the process of foreign language acquisition (FLA) forthose who have no access to other sources of oral input in the FL studied. In addition to this lack of oral input, the low economic status of mostBrazilian FL students makes such programs a very cost-effective alternativeto oral input, i.e., an important aid to their FL development.

It is also shown here that regularly listening to such broadcasts (thenews, mainly) - which are a rich source of authentic and comprehensibleinput - can truly help learners in the process of FLA. Such input, althoughlinguistically complex, is made comprehensible through the use of schemata,or background knowledge, that learners possess. These issues are exploredfrom a connectionist perspective.
