Dissertation Abstract:
This study examines the phenomenon of NP-anaphora with the main focus onModern Greek. By maintaining the empirical benefits of the classicalgenerative approach to binding, in this thesis we propose a partialpragmatic reduction of the interpretation of NP-anaphora in Modern Greek interms of the neo-Gricean pragmatic principles of communication.
The proposed analysis is articulated on the following basis: it will beargued that the choice of anaphoric expressions and their interpretation byGreek speakers and addresses respectively, can be accounted for by anapparatus based on the systematic interaction of the neo-Gricean pragmaticprinciples. These principles will predict the preferred interpretation ofNPs. Nevertheless, it should be pointed out that we do not aim at awholesale pragmatic reduction. On the contrary, this work proposes a model based on the division of labour between syntax and pragmatics.
