Responsibilities:The Princeton University Library seeks an energetic and creative subjectspecialist to build library collections and help shape library services inthree fields in the humanities at Princeton: Classics, Hellenic Studies,and Linguistics. This librarian will also work closely with the Departmentsof History, Art and Archaeology, and other relevant area andinterdisciplinary studies programs. This is one of several subjectspecialist professional positions devoted to developing and interpretingPrinceton's collections. The position reports to the Associate UniversityLibrarian for Collection Development. Responsibilities include: current andretrospective collection building in all formats; managing sizableacquisitions funds and associated approval plans; advising on preservation,digitization, and other aspects of collection maintenance, includingoffsite storage; overseeing collections in study rooms in FirestoneLibrary; and providing specialized research assistance to PrincetonUniversity faculty and students, researchers affiliated with neighboringinstitutions, and visiting scholars from the U.S. and abroad. The librarianalso provides instruction in the use of print and electronic materials forphilological, literary, cultural, and historical research; creates resourceguides and Web sites to assist Princeton researchers; serves as theLibrary's key liaison to the Department of Classics and the Programs inHellenic Studies and Linguistics; consults with members of the TechnicalServices Department to facilitate timely acquisitions and processing ofmaterials to meet academic deadlines; and works closely with staff in RareBooks and Special Collections on acquisitions and to promote use of thewealth of original and specialized material at Princeton. This librarianrepresents Princeton in the relevant regional, national, and internationalprofessional and scholarly organizations.
Qualifications:Required: an ALA-accredited Master's degree in library science, plus anadvanced degree in Classics OR one of the disciplines associated with thisposition, OR an equivalent combination of education and professionallibrary experience; proficiency in Latin, Greek, and Modern Greek; aminimum of three years of successful experience in a research library.Candidates must demonstrate mastery of the bibliographic tools, includingelectronic resources, available for the use of researchers especially inthe humanities. Candidates should be knowledgeable about the American andEuropean book trades, current and antiquarian, and the changingtechnological environment in research libraries; they should alsodemonstrate an interest in developing innovative services for researchers.Preferred: successful teaching experience, either in the classroom or inlibrary instruction; experience with cooperative library projects such asthe Center for Research Libraries and the Digital Library Federation; andknowledge of the strengths of other research collections, particularly inClassics.
