John Benjamins Publishing is pleased to announce that Spike Gildea of theUniversity of Oregon has agreed to succeed Michael Noonan as the GeneralEditor of Typological Studies in Language.
Mickey served as General Editor of TSL from 1995 until his sudden deathlast month. Under his editorship, TSL published 55 volumes (from 32 to 87in the series). He was very active as an editor, serving as co-editor ofthe Journal Studies in Language, co-editor of the series Studies inLanguage Companion Series, and as founding editor of the journal HimalayanLinguistics. We will really miss him, both as a colleague and as a friend.
Spike Gildea served as Assistant Editor of TSL from 1995-2009. Hespecializes in descriptive and historical linguistics of South America, especially the Cariban family; his primary interests in typology arealignment systems, voice, and functional motivations for the diachronicorigins of frequent typological patterns. In addition to being AssistantEditor under Mickey, he has published in several TSL volumes, edited TSLvolume 43, and is co-editing another TSL volume due out next year.
Because of the suddenness of Mickey’s death, we do not have completerecords of his correspondence regarding ideas or possible submissions forfuture TSL volumes. If you were in touch with him regarding a possible TSLvolume, please contact Spike Gildea to be sure we are aware of your interest.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non
Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be
offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers
only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
