The post is available from 1 May 2010, or as soon as possible thereafter, for aperiod of three years. You must complete a doctoral dissertation within threeyears of the start date.
The Role
You will work on a project assessing the performance of humans and automatedsystems in speaker recognition, where audiovisual information is obscured. Theproject is funded by the Marie Curie Training Network Bayesian Biometrics forForensics, which consists of 12 European research institutes and associatedpartners. The post will be based at York, but you will be required to spend aperiod at another Network institute, and you will also have the opportunity togain experience in a commercial or forensic laboratory.
You will have a Masters degree in Linguistics, Phonetics and/or Acoustics, orPsychology; a good working knowledge of statistical methods, and a high level ofcompetence in written and spoken English.

The Project
Supervisors: Dr. Dominic Watt (York) and Prof. Dr. David van Leeuwen (TNO -Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research/Radboud University,Nijmegen)
With various forms of biometric technologies becoming available, there is agrowing need for scientists who are able to assess the merits of thesetechnologies when applied to forensics. The ESR will investigate multimodalspeech and speaker recognition from a forensic perspective through assessmentsof the performance of human subjects and automated speech and speakerrecognition systems where the quality and quantity of the information availablein the audiovisual signal is manipulated experimentally. In particular, he orshe will simulate forensically-relevant scenarios in which the talker's face maybe partially or completely obscured by clothing such as the face-concealinggarments or safety equipment worn for legitimate occupational, recreational orreligious reasons, or for the commission of robberies, assaults or terroristactivities. The research will include theoretical aspects such as developing ageneral framework for evidence evaluation and reporting, and experimentalaspects by conducting studies with both human subjects and automatic speech andspeaker recognition systems. The candidate will collaborate with other PhDstudents and senior researchers in the Network, in a highly interdisciplinaryenvironment.
