Dissertation Abstract:
Drawing on data collected at the Economics News Desk of De Standaard, aquality newspaper in Belgium, this book examines the situated practices ofprint journalists in their roles as knowledge mediators and creators. Howdo reporters make sense of the various sources, narratives and framesaround them and channel these into one final news story? What is thejournalist's role in the representation of events? How are news articlesnegotiated between reporters, editors and sources? How do technologies ofproduction mediate the news process? Crucially, what does the journalistactually do while writing?
The first part of this book outlines a theoretical and methodologicalframework for a linguistic ethnographic approach to news production anddescribes the fieldwork procedures for collecting data. In the second part, the book presents four empirical chapters that analyze journalism as afield of production, then as materiality, next as literacy and finally asopacity. The third part addresses the 'So what?' question by reflecting onthe validity, reliability and generalizability of this study from theperspective of linguistic ethnography.
