CITEC Summer School: The Structure of Cognitive Motion

Date: 06-Sep-2010 - 11-Sep-2010 Location: Bielefeld, NRW, Germany Contact: Claudia Muhl Contact Email: summerschoolcit-ec.uni-bielefeld.de Meeting URL: http://www.cit-ec.de/summerschool

Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science; Neurolinguistics

Meeting Description:

What is the cognitive basis of motion? What does it mean to move intelligently? How do we integrate navigation, high-level decision-making and local path-planning with physical constraints? How can we navigate virtual environments? What are the best methods for spatial mapping? And how do humans think and talk about motion and space?

The Graduate School Cognitive Interaction Technology invites top PhD students who are interested in the themes connected to Cognitive Interaction Technology to apply for a place at the 2010 Inaugural Summer School entitled 'The Structure of Cognitive Motion: From Analysis to Synthesis'. It will take place from 6th to 11th of September 2010 at Bielefeld University.

The vision of CITEC is to create interactive tools that can be operated easily and intuitively - to fit future technology more seamlessly into daily human life. In order to accomplish this, such technology needs to be endowed with cognitive capabilities, and so part of CITEC's mission is the study of the fundamental architectural principles of cognitive interaction. We believe this goal can only be realized through intense interdisciplinary cooperation. The proposed summer school series aims to bring together researchers from a wide range of fields for discussion and exchange of ideas.

The CITEC summer school will comprise of small-group workshops on practical, experimental and theoretical topics, plenary lectures held by the invited speakers, as well as discussion groups, evening lectures and an activities program. For the afternoon courses, you may select one from the following four streams: Bio-inspired Robot Vision; Complex Human Movement - Neurocognition and Neuroinformatics in Action; Interaction, Language and Space; or From Perception to Behavior.

Invited speakers:

- Nicola Clayton - University of Cambridge - Hanspeter Mallot - Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen - David Rosenbaum - Pennsylvania State University - Stefan Schaal - University of Southern California - Anatol Stefanowitsch - Bremen University - David Wolpert - NASA Ames Research Center, Stanford University

We hope to offer a rich curriculum which will promote discussion across the boundaries of different branches of science.
