Abstract:

All languages encode aspects of culture and every culture has its ownspecificities to be proud of and to be transmitted. The papers in this bookexplore aspects of this relationship between language and culture,considering issues related to the processes of internationalization andlocalization of the English language. The volume is divided into two sections,complementing each other; the first one (Localizing English) focuses on thesignificance of ethnic knowledge, local culture, and tradition wherever Englishis used. The second one (Internationalizing English) deals with the degreesand patterns of internationalization of English deriving from its contact withdiverse cultures and its adaptation to different professional settings andcommunicative purposes.

The Editors:Roberta Facchinetti is Professor of English Language and Linguistics at theUniversity of Verona, Italy. Her research field and publications are mainlyconcerned with language description, textual analysis and pragmatics. This isdone mostly by means of computerized corpora of both synchronic anddiachronic English.

David Crystal is a writer, broadcaster, lecturer and editor. He is HonoraryProfessor of Linguistics at the University of Bangor, received an OBE in 1995for his services to the study of the English language, and was made a Fellowof the British Academy in 2000. He has published extensively on Englishlanguage and Linguistics.

Barbara Seidlhofer, Professor of English and Applied Linguistics at theUniversity of Vienna, is the founding director of the Vienna-OxfordInternational Corpus of English (VOICE). She has published widely ininternational journals on English language, discourse analysis and languageeducation.
