Dissertation Abstract:
The main goal of the dissertation was to explore the syntax, semantics, pragmatics and functions of basic verba dicendi (say, talk, tell and speak) in contemporary American academic spoken English (in the MICASE corpus of lectures). A point of departure for my investigations was the fact that all the four verbs are employed to report speech acts, but these verba dicendi may perspectivize the linguistic scene in different ways. Consequently, what was of focal interest in my doctoral dissertation was the way of perspectivizing the acts of locution by means of basic verba dicendi, with corpus linguistics constituting the most suitable methodological tool, complemented, inter alia, by introspective judgments. The implications and applications of the findings may be numerous, ranging from pedagogical ones (material writers would be in a better position to generate EAP textbooks which might reflect actual language use) to linguistic ones: linguists could either validate or disconfirm their hypotheses concerning the actual occurrences of basic verba dicend in the academic milieu.
