Dissertation Abstract:
This thesis consists in the systematic observation of a certain number ofsense values of the marker to, with regard to its use as a preposition inpresent-day English. The marker to is often associated with a dynamicaspect and has frequently been interpreted as a marker of prospectivevalidation. Set against the theoretical background of the Théorie desOpérations Enonciatives (Theory of Enunciative Operations), elaborated byAntoine Culioli, our analysis suggests that the functioning of the markercan be accounted for by way of two basic operations, identification anddisconnection. The different meanings associated with the marker (asintroducer of a final location, a beneficiary or even a particular result)are thus the product of the interaction between the operations marked by toand the syntactic and semantic properties in the context and its variouselements. Factors such as the syntactic and semantic properties of theterms connected by to, their functionality, the type of process invoked inthe utterance, and the relationship's locator all contribute to thecontextual emergence of interpretative changes.
