Dissertation Abstract:

This dissertation is held by the overarching idea that a precisemetalanguage should be required when we intend to critically talk abouttranslations as texts. Due to the lack of communication between thetranslation industry and academic research, on the one hand the notionsheralded by Translation Studies are regarded as 'parochial' byprofessionals (a category that includes editors, proof-readers, translationagencies, translation teachers, etc.), who oftentimes prefer relyingexclusively upon their own professional experience. On the other handscholars sometimes fail to make their findings accessible to the wholecommunity of practitioners. The goal of the dissertation was to bridge thisgap and develop a model that combines various contributions in order toprovide a source of translational metalanguage that can be used to assessor discuss a translation. The model was tested against a case study, whichis a text in English - The Secret Sharer - having different translations inItalian. The aim of analysing multiple parallel translations of the sametext was not to 'compare' them in a merely contrastive way, but to see whatkind of results may be obtained through such a model. Translation memorytools and corpus linguistics applications were employed in the analytic phase.
