Job Purpose:
This is a 3 year Research Assistant position to work on an ESRC funded sociolinguistic project on bidialectalism in a previously monolectal speech community. The project aims to establish the extent to which speakers have access to both standard and local varieties in their linguistic repertoire and identify the social and linguistic features which delimit their use.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Managing initial data collection phase, including training onsite fieldworker in sociolinguistic interview practices, and liaising on regular transfer of data files.
- Training transcribers on project specific transcription protocols and software for time-aligned transcription of speech.
- Extraction and coding of linguistic variables according to previously documented sociolinguistic constraints on use.
- Statistical analysis of speech data using a number of software programmes.
- Preparation of results for presentation at international conferences.
- Initial write-up of results for co-authored publications in top-rated journals.
- Preparation of materials for community and school-based impact projects

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Knowledge/Qualifications:
Essential:
- A1 Degree or equivalent professional qualification in Sociolinguistics

Desirable:
- B1 PhD or Masters in Labovian Sociolinguistics.

Skills:
Essential:
- C1 Ability to use a number of software programmes for analysis of speech data.

Desirable:
- D1 Ability to use a number of multivariate analysis programmes, including R.

Experience:
Essential:
- E1 1-2 years relevant research experience or equivalent
- E2 Experience in working with speech data within a quantitative, sociolinguistic paradigm.

Desirable:
- F1 Experience of data collection, transcription, and statistical analysis of forms.
- F2 Experience in working with both phonetic and morphosyntactic variation.
- F3 Experience in Labovian variationist sociolinguistics, including data collection, transcription, and quantitative analysis of speech data using a range of state of the art software.


Terms and Conditions:
- Salary will be on the University’s Research & Teaching Grade, level 6, £26,004 - £29,249 per annum.
- This post is fixed term for 3 years.
- New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
- The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
