Focus: The UCREL Summer School 2013 is the third event in a highly successfulseriesthat began in 2011. Sponsored by UCREL at Lancaster University – oneof the world's leading and longest-established centres for corpus-based research –its aim is to support students of language and linguistics in the development ofadvanced skills in corpus methods.Minimum Education Level: MA
Description:The UCREL Summer School is intended primarily for postgraduate researchstudents (and secondarily for masters level students and postdoctoralresearchers) who require in depth knowledge of corpus based methodologies fortheir degree projects. It is not aimed at raw beginners, but rather at PhDstudents who have at least some introductory experience of analysis usinglanguage corpora, and who wish to expand their knowledge of key issues andtechniques in cutting-edge corpus research.
The programme consists of a series of intensive two-hour sessions, someinvolving practical work, others more discussion oriented.Topics include:- Advanced corpus queries and the use of regular expressions, and Spellingvariation- Historical, child and online data- Using XML in corpus encoding and analysis and the statistics of collocation- Studying language change in diachronic corpora- Corpus-based approaches to metaphor in discourse- Pragmatics, politeness and impoliteness in the corpus- Using comparable and parallel corpora in contrastive and translation studies- Understanding statistics for corpus analysis
The UCREL Summer School is part of three ‘Lancaster Summer Schools inInterdisciplinary Digital Methods’ (see the website for further information).There are additional daily plenary lectures shared with the other two SummerSchool events, each illustrating cutting-edge digital research methods usingcorpus data:

The UCREL Summer School ran for the first time in 2011, and was repeated (withthe same programme) in 2012. We have extended the length of the event, so thatit is now taught over four days rather than three. We have also revised thesyllabus content for 2013; for this reason, repeat participation by those whohave already attended the summer school in 2011 or 2012 is welcome.
