Job Title: Scientific Laboratory Manager
Job Rank: Manager

Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Computational Linguistics; General Linguistics; Psycholinguistics; Semantics

Description:

We are looking for a reliable and committed personality to assist in the implementation and statistical analysis of linguistic experiments. The scientific focus of the professorship in semantics is on the meaning of language in the semantics-pragmatics interface with a special focus on semantic phenomena of visual communication, dimensions of meaning and multimodality, iconicity, information structure, quantification, and indefiniteness. To empirically investigate research questions in these topics, we regularly conduct experiments in our multimedia lab.

Responsibilities:
Your future main task will be to assist in experiment design, data collection and processing, and statistical analysis of all experiments conducted in semantics at the Institute of Linguistics. In addition, your responsibilities will also include supervising and coordinating the lab. Your tasks are:
- semantic research
- conception of experiment designs (e.g., determining variables, scale levels, and research methods)
- creating experiment stimuli (e.g., editing audio and video data)
- assisting in data collection (e.g., recording and annotating subject responses to experiment stimuli)
- processing data and doing statistical analyses and evaluation (e.g., structuring data sets and performing hypothesis testing / variance or regression analysis)
- providing data visualizations for analyzing experiment results
- coordinating appointments and maintaining laboratory equipment
- acting as the contact person for the secretary, PhD students, postdocs, PIs and other involved researchers regarding questions about using the lab and conducting experiments
- providing training and technical support to PIs, involved researchers, and students

There is an opportunity for self-determined research.

Your profile:
You should have the following qualifications:
- a completed master's degree (or assimilable) or a doctorate in a relevant subject (e.g. linguistics, computational linguistics, psychology, cognitive science)
- very good knowledge of English and good knowledge of German
- very good knowledge of empirical scientific work
- very good knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics
- very good knowledge of statistics software for data analysis and visualization (e.g. R, SPSS, Python, MATLAB, Excel, ...)
- knowledge of research questions in linguistics and the ontologies and terminologies used therein
- basic knowledge in recording and editing videos, images and audio files
- excellent communication skills and very good organizational skills

The following qualifications are desirable:
- experience with multimodal empirical data
- didactic skills and teaching experience
