Introduction to Columbia School Linguistics

Focus: We will be focusing on the main theoretical and methodological concepts of the Columbia School of Linguistics, a functionalist approach that aims to account for the distribution of grammatical and lexical items in naturally-occurring discourse, based on the understanding that language is fundamentally an instrument for human communication, and that its characteristics are shaped by the physical and cognitive capacities of its human users.

Description:
This introductory course will be held online in nine sessions, on Tuesdays, 2 pm-4 pm (New York time), from October 3 to November 28. This year’s instructors are Andrew McCormick, Daan Van Soeren and Ludmila Novotny. The language of the course is English. Certificates of completion will be issued.
