Call for Papers:

The National University of Singapore will hold a joint meeting of the inaugural International Symposium of Bornean Linguistics (ISBL) and the 27th International Symposium on Malay/Indonesian Linguistics (ISMIL27), on June 5–7, 2024. The meeting will include a joint session on Malayic languages of Borneo.

We invite abstracts for 20 minute talks at ISBL or ISMIL. Papers presented at ISBL should be concerned with the languages of Borneo, whereas presented at ISMIL are concerned with the Malay/Indonesian language in any of its varieties. Presentations may be on any linguistic subfield, and we encourage a diverse range of theoretical and practical approaches to issues in linguistics. We particularly encourage presentations from junior scholars and those from or in partnership with local scholars and speakers, as well as work on lesser studied language varieties. The language of presentation is English.

The program features the following plenary speakers: for ISBL, Charlotte Hemmings (University of Oxford) and Roselind Wan (Curtin University Malaysia) and for ISMIL, Nala Lee (National University of Singapore), Bradley McDonnell (University of Hawai’i), and Hiroki Nomoto (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies).

Submission instructions: Anonymous one-page abstracts (data and references may be on a second page) for both ISBL and ISMIL consideration should be submitted in electronic form (PDF and MSWord) to the following address: [email protected] . Please indicate your name, affiliation, and title of abstract in the body of the email, as well as whether you are submitting for ISBL, ISMIL, or our joint session on Malayic languages of Borneo.
