Description:

The Department of Linguistics at Brigham Young University is pleased to advertise a full-time faculty position in the field of linguistics for those at any career stage. This Continuing Faculty Status-track (similar to tenure-track) position entails teaching courses, conducting research and mentoring students at the BA and MA levels. We seek student-focused candidates who are capable of teaching courses in core areas of linguistics. While not necessary, a background in semantics and/or pragmatics that would allow for teaching at higher levels in these areas would be valuable.

Candidates will be expected to enthusiastically and vigorously contribute to the teaching and mentoring of students in our department's undergraduate majors in Linguistics and Applied English Linguistics, as well as our MA in Linguistics. Ability to contribute to our other programs, including an MA in TESOL, BA in Editing and Publishing and a minor in linguistic computing is also desirable. In the BYU Department of Linguistics, we pride ourselves on a culture of collaboration and mutual support, which upholds superior teaching and fosters the flourishing of faculty research in a spectrum of exciting areas.

Required Degree: Ph.D. in Linguistics or related field.

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:

All candidates must have:
- Proficiency to teach courses in core areas of linguistics. See course listings in associated programs: catalog.byuedu/programs/34637; catalog.byu.edu/programs/34636; gradstudies.byu.edu/linguistics-ma.
- Dedication to innovative teaching focused on student growth and lifelong learning.
- Commitment to mentoring students effectively in and out of class. Ability to contribute to linguistics thesis committees as a reader and/or as a chair.
- Willingness to support student faith through obvious commitment to the religious expectations of the sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- Evident potential for or substantiated record of scholarly research and/or a well-defined research agenda.

Ideal candidates would have some of the following:
- Keenness to collaborate with students on diverse research projects, both faculty-led and student-driven.
- Ability to bridge personal scholarship with other programs in the department.
- Mission-aligned scholarship that can be readily connected with BYU emphases on multilingualism, family, religion, human flourishing, and constitutional government.

Duties/Expectations: Under a 10-month contract, primary responsibilities will encompass:
- Teaching six courses annually, predominantly within the Linguistics BA, Applied English Linguistics BA and Linguistics MA, but also possibly in other department programs (ling.byu.edu/all-programs)
- Continually updating and refining teaching and mentoring techniques with a commitment to engaging and educating learners effectively.
- Conducting original research and disseminating that research in reputable peer-reviewed journals, books, or other scholarly outlets.
- Mentoring students in linguistic research, research presentations, peer-reviewed article publication, and applying for funding.
- Contributing to other departmental or college duties, including student advising, thesis chairing, program coordination, committee service, and shared governance.
